In 1847 Henry Francis Lyte (1793-1847) published a hymn called ‘Abide with Me’. This hymn was published in the 1861 Hymns Ancient and Modern in which it was paired with the tune EVENTIDE by William Henry Monk (1823-1889). The hymn has featured at many significant public occasions since it was published, and is associated with many events. Since 1927 the hymn has been sung every year before the FA Cup Final Match. Mahatma Gandhi reputedly held it as one of his favourite texts, and it was sung at the weddings of George VI, Elizabeth II, and at the funeral of Mother Theresa of Calcutta in 1997. Popular legend also has it that the tune was the last piece played by the band as the Titanic was sinking. In popular culture, there have been many covers of it by various artists, including Elton John who sang it on ‘An Audience with Elton John’ in 1997.
