1912 : MAKE ME A CHANNEL OF THY PEACE

This is the earliest date to which a hymn known as ‘The Prayer of St Francis’ can be traced. Although the hymn ‘Make me a channel of Thy peace’ is attributed to Francis of Assisi it cannot be found to date back much earlier than to a French prayer published in a Parisian prayer booklet in 1912. The prayer has been associated with many famous people, notably Mother Theresa of Calcutta and Desmond Tutu who have both been quoted as having said that its forms part of their daily prayer and devotions. The famous musical setting, which was sung at the funeral of Princess Diana in 1997, was composed by the worship singer and songwriter Sebastian Temple (1928-1997).
